What I Need to Know About Infertility

If you are struggling to conceive, it can be hard to feel happy as friends and family celebrate pregnancies, births, and raising kids. An often isolating condition, infertility is distressing but not uncommon, and here at Williams Ob/Gyn & Associates in San Dimas, CA, we have worked with countless patients having trouble getting pregnant naturally.

Our OBGYN staff is committed to helping you through your infertility, and working with you on options to help with conception. Here are some important things to know about infertility:

How do I know if I have infertility?

If you are struggling to become pregnant after a year of consistently having sex without using any contraceptives or protection, this is an indication of infertility. Infertility can also be defined by the inability to sustain a pregnancy to term.

What causes infertility?

Infertility can affect either partner. In males, it can be due to sperm damage, a low sperm count, lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking, drug use, or health conditions like obesity, untreated STDs, or prior surgeries/medical treatments.

For females, infertility can be caused by too low or high body weight, substance use, or health problems, including endometriosis or uterine fibroids. Women over the age of 35 are more likely to suffer from infertility.

What can I do about my infertility?

At our San Dimas office, we have several options for helping you with your infertility. Your OBGYN will likely start with a series of exams and tests, such as an ultrasound or ovulation test for the female partner, and a sperm analysis for the male partner. Depending on the results, your OBGYN may recommend prescription medication, a change in sexual intercourse habits, or surgical/medical procedures. These options include in vitro fertilization and the use of donor eggs or sperm.
