There are certain gynecological problems that you might deal with that require surgery. The idea of needing surgery can be overwhelming and you might be worried about various aspects of surgery and recovery. It’s important to know that many procedures can be minimally invasive and with new technology, certain surgeries become easier than ever. Our OBGYN Dr. Richard Williams at Williams OB/GYN & Associates in San Dimas, CA can explain what minimally invasive procedures might consist of and what you can expect from the process.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
There are certain procedures that you might need in your lifetime from our OBGYN. It’s important to know that there are many procedures that can be done with minimally invasive procedures. This means that just a small incision is required for the procedure, and it can be done laparoscopically. Because there is a smaller incision made, recovery time is usually decreased as well. You’ll find that there’s less worry about a large scar too.
One common form of minimally invasive surgery is known as hysteroscopy. This procedure is used to examine the inside of the uterus using a hysteroscope. No incisions are needed for this procedure and the hysteroscope is put through the vagina and cervix and into your womb. This can be used to investigate certain symptoms and problems like heavy periods, unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, and repeated miscarriages. This can also help with diagnosing issues like fibroids and polyps.
Another common procedure is laparoscopy. This can help your doctor look at the organs in your abdomen and pelvic organs. A small incision will be made in the belly, and this can be used to check for tumors, injuries, infections, ovarian cysts, and issues with the fallopian tubes. This can also be used to perform a tubal ligation to permanently prevent pregnancy.
Our doctor will explain what will happen during the procedure and what they may be looking for. You should be sure to ask questions about what may happen during recovery and what the process might look like. Often, these procedures are done on an outpatient status, meaning that you’ll get to go home the same day.
